By the end of the first quarter Thursday night, Odessa High had already made it clear this wasn't going to be another frustrating night at Ratliff Stadium.
By halftime, there wasn't much doubt left at all.
The Bronchos raced out to a 37-point first-half lead and opened the 2026 season with a dominant 51-14 victory over MX Prep of Mexico City, giving Odessa High its first victory earned on the field since Sept. 19, 2024.
It was also the first time in two years the Bronchos have opened a season 1-0.
Quarterback Phillip Carrasco led an Odessa offense that repeatedly found the end zone, completing 14 of 25 passes for 218 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.
Running back Ayden Garcia did damage both on the ground and through the air. Garcia rushed 11 times for 58 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 51 yards and another score.
Bronchos take control immediately
Odessa High didn't need long to establish control.
Carrasco connected with Garcia for a 30-yard touchdown with 8:12 remaining in the first quarter, and Ivan Castor's extra point gave Odessa a 7-0 lead.
A safety pushed the advantage to 9-0 before Ethan Garcia broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run, sending the Bronchos into the second quarter leading 16-0.
It was exactly the kind of start Odessa High head coach Erik Hartman wanted to see.
Hartman praised Carrasco's passing, Ayden Garcia's running and an offensive line that controlled the game early as the Bronchos seemingly could do little wrong in the opening quarter.
And they weren't finished.
Odessa High continued piling on points in the second quarter while its defense kept MX Prep off the scoreboard.
A recovered muffed punt gave the Bronchos possession at the MX Prep 35 late in the half. Carrasco capitalized, finding Joe Ortega for a 20-yard touchdown with 1:47 remaining to stretch Odessa's lead to 30-0.
Then the defense gave Carrasco another opportunity.
Defensive back Adrian Escandon intercepted MX Prep quarterback Matias Araujo with 47 seconds remaining.
Odessa needed only 14 seconds to turn it into points.
Carrasco connected with Anthony Martinez for a 16-yard touchdown, sending the Bronchos into the locker room with a commanding 37-0 halftime advantage.
MX Prep finally broke through on a 10-yard touchdown run by Emilio Ayala, completing a nine-play, 81-yard possession that consumed seven minutes.
Running back JJ Davila later added a 57-yard touchdown run as the Eagles cut into the Odessa lead.
Davila was MX Prep's biggest offensive threat, finishing with 126 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
The two touchdowns weren't enough to make the game competitive again, but they gave Hartman something to emphasize after an otherwise dominant opener.
The Odessa coach said his team wanted the shutout but made some mistakes after halftime that allowed MX Prep back onto the scoreboard.
For a team preparing for the grind of District 2-6A, those mistakes provide something to correct even after a 37-point victory.
Carrasco connected with tight end Joshua Garcia for a 19-yard touchdown, giving the Odessa quarterback his fourth touchdown pass of the night.
The defense then created another opportunity when linebacker Devin Padilla recovered a fumble at the MX Prep 42 with 5:31 remaining.
Odessa turned that takeaway into one final touchdown, pushing the score to 51-14 with 2:51 remaining.
That finished a night in which Odessa High's offense produced explosive plays, its quarterback threw four touchdowns and its defense helped create points with multiple takeaways.
More importantly, it finished something that had been nearly two years in the making.
Odessa High's last victory earned on the field came in a wild 57-49 win over Lubbock Monterey on Sept. 19, 2024. The Bronchos were credited with a victory over Amarillo High last season by forfeit, but Thursday night was different.
This one was earned between the lines.
And the Bronchos didn't merely snap the streak.
They left no doubt about it.
