Midland High opens the new season Friday night against the El Paso Pebble Hills Spartans at Astound Broadband Stadium, giving the Bulldogs an opportunity to start the year under the lights in front of their home crowd. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.After an offseason of workouts, practices and preparation, the evaluation period changes considerably once the ball is kicked off.
Friday night counts.
For Midland High, the opener provides the first opportunity to establish what kind of team the Bulldogs intend to be before the schedule eventually turns toward District 2-6A play.
Start fast at home
Playing the opener at Astound Broadband Stadium gives Midland an immediate advantage the Bulldogs will want to use.Rather than spending opening Friday on the road, Midland gets familiar surroundings and a home crowd as Pebble Hills makes the trip east from El Paso.
But home field won't matter much if the Bulldogs give the Spartans opportunities.
Season openers can expose the little things quickly. False starts, missed assignments, turnovers and special-teams mistakes can turn an otherwise solid performance into a difficult night.
That's why establishing some early rhythm will be important.
Offensively, Midland will want to stay ahead of the chains and put together sustained possessions rather than repeatedly asking its defense to return to the field. Defensively, keeping Pebble Hills from finding an early explosive play could help the Bulldogs dictate the pace.
First answers of a new season
Every team enters Week 1 with questions.Some positions may have been decided weeks ago. Others can continue evolving once players are performing under actual Friday night pressure.
That's part of what makes the opener valuable.
Midland's coaching staff will get its first full-game look at how this group responds when a drive stalls, when the opponent lands a punch or when the Bulldogs suddenly have an opportunity to take control.
Those moments can't be completely recreated during August practices.
Friday night will provide them.
The road to district begins here
The larger goal remains down the road.District 2-6A play will ultimately determine Midland's place in the postseason race, but the Bulldogs have several weeks to develop before reaching that point.
The objective now is to make those weeks count.
A strong performance against Pebble Hills would give Midland a foundation to build upon. Any weaknesses exposed Friday become something the Bulldogs can address before the stakes become considerably higher later this fall.
There will be time for all of that beginning Saturday morning.
Friday night is about finally playing football.
The offseason is finished.
The lights at Astound Broadband Stadium are waiting, and the 2026 Midland Bulldogs are ready to take the field.
