San Angelo Central’s opening win was built on balance and nearly undone by an opponent’s late surge. Its first road game brings another quarterback capable of stressing a defense in more than one way.

Lake Ridge’s DeShawn Edwards passed for 199 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 73 yards and another score in a season-opening loss to Prosper Walnut Grove. He accounted for 272 yards, giving Central a clear assignment Friday at R.L. Anderson Stadium: defend the whole play when Edwards drops back.

The Bobcats enter with momentum after beating Abilene High 28-23 in the 100th meeting between the programs. Central led 14-3 at halftime and extended the advantage to 21-3 after blocking a punt in the third quarter. Abilene mounted a fourth-quarter push, but the Bobcats held on to snap a three-game losing streak in the series.

Senior quarterback Micah Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score. Zeyvion Johnson carried 19 times for 139 yards. Jesse Smith caught five passes for 97 yards, while Gavin Johnson had five receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown.

That distribution makes Central difficult to compress. Zeyvion Johnson demands attention between the tackles and beyond them; Micah Smith can punish a defense through the air and with his legs; and the receiving group produced multiple reliable targets in Week 1. Central’s experienced offensive line, led by UTSA commit Ethan Boyd, is central to keeping that balance intact on the road.

Lake Ridge is 0-1 after allowing Walnut Grove to pull away in the second half. The game was tied 21-21 at halftime, and Lake Ridge still trailed only 35-28 after three quarters before Walnut Grove scored twice in the fourth. Edwards completed 10 of 15 passes with one interception. Rayden Newsome caught four passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

That profile creates two parallel challenges. Central’s defense must keep Edwards contained without surrendering deep opportunities to Newsome. Central’s offense, meanwhile, should test a Lake Ridge defense that allowed 28 second-half points and 49 overall, according to MaxPreps and the Dallas Morning News.

The Bobcats cannot ignore their own finish. An 18-point cushion against Abilene became a five-point final margin. The blocked punt and early defensive work showed Central can control field position and dictate a game, but the fourth quarter showed that control has to be renewed possession by possession.

Friday is Central’s first-ever game against Lake Ridge, according to the Bobcats’ schedule announcement. The Eagles went 9-3 last season and were eliminated 30-28 by Permian in the second round of the playoffs. Their opener did not erase that recent context; it simply made their home debut urgent.

Central has the steadier Week 1 evidence. Lake Ridge has the kind of mobile quarterback who can make steadiness difficult. The team that handles the second half better should leave Mansfield having answered the most important question from its opener.
