One hundred meetings into one of West Texas' oldest rivalries, San Angelo Central and Abilene High found another way to make things interesting.

The Bobcats built an 18-point lead, weathered a furious second-half comeback and made one final defensive stand Friday night to knock off No. 18 Abilene High, 28-23, at San Angelo Stadium.

Central's victory in the 2026 season opener snapped a three-game losing streak to the Eagles and, perhaps fittingly for the 100th meeting between the programs, broke a 47-47-5 deadlock in the all-time series. The Bobcats now own a 48-47-5 advantage.

It was a much different start than Central experienced against Abilene the previous two seasons.

Senior quarterback Micah Smith got the Bobcats moving after their opening possession ended in a punt. Smith connected with Tucker Beaty for a 7-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, then called his own number on a 2-yard touchdown run early in the second.

Central carried a 14-3 advantage into halftime while its defense kept Abilene's offense out of the end zone.

Then the Bobcats' special teams delivered.

Central blocked an Abilene punt moments into the third quarter, and Dereon McDuffie scooped it up and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown.

Just like that, Central was ahead 21-3.

But anyone expecting the 18-point advantage to turn into a comfortable opening-night victory quickly found out otherwise.

Abilene quarterback Tristan Beal began bringing the Eagles back. He found Jaden West for a 3-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal, and an interception by Abilene's Camrin Allen helped set up another score early in the fourth quarter.

Beal's 23-yard touchdown pass to John Rangel cut Central's lead to 21-16.

The momentum had swung sharply toward the Eagles.

Central answered.

Running back Zey Johnson helped power an 84-yard drive, carrying six times for 39 yards before Smith found Gavin Johnson for an 18-yard touchdown. The score restored Central's two-possession advantage at 28-16 with 7:29 remaining.

Abilene still wasn't finished.

Beal scored on a 6-yard run less than two minutes later, trimming the Bobcats' lead to 28-23 and setting up a tense finish.

Central drove all the way to the Abilene 3 on its next possession but came away without points after a mishandled snap on a field-goal attempt. That gave the Eagles the football at their own 14 with 49 seconds remaining and one last opportunity to steal the game.

The Bobcats' defense made sure it didn't happen.

Abilene managed only 12 yards on its final possession before a desperation Hail Mary was knocked down on the final play.

Central 28. Abilene 23.

And after losing the previous three meetings against the Eagles — including season-opening losses of 60-36 and 42-21 the last two years — the Bobcats finally had their answer.

Smith finished 15-of-22 for 184 yards and two touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground.

Zey Johnson gave Central balance with 139 yards on 19 carries, including a crucial 44-yard run on the Bobcats' final offensive drive.

Jesse Smith caught five passes for 97 yards, while Gavin Johnson added five receptions for 51 yards and the fourth-quarter touchdown.

For a Central team coming off an 8-4 season and its first playoff victory since 2020, opening night provided an early test of its ability to respond when a game began slipping away.

The Bobcats passed it.

Central moves to 1-0 overall and 0-0 in District 2-6A and will hit the road next Friday for its first-ever meeting with Mansfield Lake Ridge. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 4.

And before moving on to Week 2, the Bobcats can enjoy owning the lead in a rivalry that began more than a century ago:

Central 48. Abilene 47. Five ties.

After 100 meetings, that one-game margin was earned the hard way Friday night.
