Thank you for joining us JP. Let’s get to know you a little better. What is something fans up in the grandstands don’t know about you, and what do you enjoy doing off the field?
Thank you for having me today. Something fans probably do not know about me is that I enjoy playing golf and hanging out with my friends.
Let’s talk a little about Friday night’s game against Franklin. You guys faced third-and-14 twice, and both times you went deep — a 69-yard touchdown to Jordon Shields and a 47-yard touchdown to Maddox Marquez. When you're standing in the huddle on third-and-long like that, what's going through your head? Are you thinking, “We need 14 yards,” or are you already looking for the big play?
I trust the play call my coaches have called and I trust my receivers to execute the play.
Something else I wanted to ask you about Friday night. Late in the game, Santiago Mendoza came in at quarterback and finished the night with a touchdown of his own. As the starting quarterback and one of the leaders of this team, what's it like watching another quarterback get his opportunity and seeing your teammate finish it off like that?
I am excited for my teammates to have the opportunity to compete when they get the chance.
Take us through a normal day for you and how you balance school, homework, workouts, practice and your social life.
We are currently having morning practice due to the new rules and we watch film and lift weights after school. I am able to be home early in the evening to get all my school work completed. I spend my evenings relaxing at home and my weekends I am hanging out with my friends after Saturday morning workouts.
Do you have a pregame ritual, superstition or routine that you never skip? What about a special pregame meal or snack?
I think a well known ritual that I have is a throw up before games. It's something I have done since I was a kid and now it feels just part of my routine.
If you're given the locker-room speaker, what song are you banging to get the team hyped?
Anything by Boosie Badzz
Who is that one special coach through your years of playing, and what did he do or say to inspire you?
Coach Ray Johnson, he coached me at a young age and he even turned me into a quarterback. Growing up I wanted to be a receiver and Coach Johnson thought I would go further and could help the team as a quarterback, so I took on the role and haven't looked back.
What’s one part of the game you have worked the hardest to improve since last season?
The mental aspect of the game and watching film and learning from it.
Are you planning to play college ball? Any particular school you’d like to attend? Have there been any offers yet? What would you major in?
Yes I plan to play football in college, I have 4 offers and looking for the best opportunity to showcase my skills at the next level. My major is Business.
Those little dudes up in the stands watching and admiring you, wanting to play varsity ball and beyond — what words of advice would you give them?
Enjoy it all because it comes faster than you think and just have fun.
Before we go, is there anything else you would like to share about yourself or the team, or any shoutouts or kudos you’d like to give?
I would like to thank all the coaches who have helped and guided me along the way of my Quarterback journey. Thank you to Coach Hartman, Coach Chisum, Coach Wilkie, Coach Murchinson, and Coach Franco. I can't thank them enough for all the time they have spent growing me not only as a quarterback but as a young man as well.
Thank you JP for allowing us to get to know the person under the #4 LEE helmet.
