Permian and Harker Heights both arrive at Leo Buckley Stadium unbeaten, but they took opposite roads to 1-0.
The Panthers smothered Amarillo Tascosa after the opening series and rolled to a 38-7 victory. The Knights needed 22 fourth-quarter points and a touchdown with 14 seconds remaining to beat Hutto 53-50. Friday’s game places Permian’s early defensive standard directly against one of Week 1’s most productive offenses.
Tascosa drove 75 yards for a touchdown on its first possession. After that, Permian allowed little. The Panthers held the Rebels to 133 total yards for the game and forced three turnovers. Nata Cardoza intercepted a pass, Malachi Mendoza recovered a fumble, and the defense helped Permian turn a close opening stretch into a rout.
The offense distributed the scoring. Five Panthers reached the end zone, and quarterback Kayden Vickers completed five passes for 104 yards. Daebreon McDowell caught two for 74 yards and a touchdown. Cayden Taylor carried 10 times for 53 yards and scored from two yards out, and a 34-yard field goal by Munoz completed the scoring.
Harker Heights will stress that defense in ways Tascosa did not. Quarterback Hudson Humble completed 26 of 38 passes for 270 yards and five touchdowns at Hutto, though he also threw three interceptions. Ryan Taylor caught nine passes for 133 yards and four touchdowns, and the Knights had two 100-yard rushers: Eric Young III and Brandon Fowlkes.
The finish showed both the ceiling and the risk in Harker Heights’ style. The Knights trailed 44-31 entering the fourth quarter, then drove 65 yards for the winning score. Humble found Arshawn Spann for a 10-yard touchdown with 14 seconds left, and Harker Heights converted the two-point try for the final margin.
That comeback gives Permian several clear priorities. Cardoza and the secondary cannot become so occupied with Taylor that Humble finds favorable matchups elsewhere. The front must also handle a rushing attack capable of punishing a defense that spreads out. Most of all, Permian needs to turn takeaway chances into possessions; Humble’s three interceptions in Week 1 are the obvious opening.
The Panthers can help their defense by keeping Harker Heights’ offense on the sideline. Taylor’s workload was modest in the opener because Permian controlled the game, but a functional ground game would reduce the number of possessions in a matchup the Knights would gladly accelerate.
Permian’s Week 1 win was comprehensive, yet Friday should tell more about the Panthers’ ability to defend in space and respond when an opponent scores. Harker Heights has already proved it can erase a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit. Permian has already proved it can close down an offense after one successful drive. One of those patterns will have to break.
